From my personal point of view, I think that ESP and ELT will always go together, you can't have ESP without ELT. ESP is still ELT but with the difference that it is tought for an specfic objecive, it can be for working purposes for example a Doctor that wants to learn the terms and the English that he may only use for his work. It's still ELT but focused on something specific.
ESP teaching is different from ELT, for it requires us to be fully qualified in EFL and as much as possible in the subject área. Yet, ESP is not just a matter of science words and granunar for scientists or for business students: the fact that the language is used for a specific purpose does not imply that it is a special form of the language, different in kind from other forms. ESP is not different in kind from other forms of language teaching, since it does not require a specific methodology. The principies for teaching ESP should be oriented towards effective and efficient leaming.
Task 2: To answer how EOP and EAP differ I will use the example of a doctor. He is required to write a 'prescription paper' can develop the skill by attending a six-week part-time course. However, he may find it difficult to socialize with native speakers in the social events of the hospital. Nevertheless, unless it is part of his job to receive and work with other doctors, the company is not interested in developing his language skills in this area.
Task 3: What I thinki that general language teaching covers the teaching of the fundamentals of grammar, expression as well as phonetics and provides a stronger or weaker basis for possible later language studies while teaching language for specific purposes is determined by different professional or occupational, social and other needs of the learner. Therefore english for specific purposes should includes specialized programs which are designed to develop the communicative use of english in a specialized field of science, work or technology. Finally is importan to mention that to be able to speak on a professional subject is not enough to know general vocabulary.
The difference of the EAP and EOP course for doctors that I consider is as follows: EAP might be the theoretical part that doctors need to understand and/or write academic papers. On the other hand, EOP is more oriented to the application of this knowledge, that is, the doctor will use the skills of the language while prescribing a drug to a patient.
I agree with the statement proposed in #2 in that General English and ESP must take students' needs into consideration in order to have a successful language program. However, I do spot a difference between them, for instance the use of the different materials in teaching. Whereas in General English the use of materials can be non-restricted to one topic, ESP requires the use of authentic material to the field of study.
I agree with the first part but I think EOP may not be only oriented to the application of the knowledge previously learned if there has not been any previous knowledge. This is, many people get the job first and then they have to learn basic English and vocabulary related to the occupation. Many doctors study only basic concepts but in practice they do not know how to express them in English.
Question #1: What differences would you expect to find between an EOP course and EAP course for doctors? In what ways do you think occupational and academic needs differ?
I consider that in an EOP course the doctors should be expose to learn vocabulary or terms of their filed cause this type of course is more focus on a specific area in this case medicine so the course should be especially for doctor who needs to learn certain terms in English. In the other side, EAP course is focus on more general English instead of a particular area.
Question #2: What differences in theory or in practice do you think there are?
Well, I think there are differences because ESP is designed to achieve or cover specific learner´s needs and in the General English Teaching is focus in teaching the language in a wide manner without focus in specific points, just that students learn the target language.
1. I think that the difference is in the degree of exposure, that is, in the EAP course is more focused on the theory, methodology, concepts and lexicon; all this takes place in a classroom. Whereas EOP focuses more on the application of this knowledge in real context. 2. I believe that a same approah can be carried out in both courses but the materials would differ in that General English uses a wide range of authentic materials and ESP would demand the use of specific authentic materials that relate to the occupation they are intended to.
What differences would you expect to find between an EOP course and an EAP course for doctors? In what ways do you think occupational and academic needs differ? EOP this kind of English is used in a real working world, this type of English is already used in the workplace and are terms that define each process in the work environment. In contrast EAP, the English used here is only for academic purposes, that is, only to cover the requirements proposed by the institution, and that in the long it is related to the purpose of the Program of Studies.
All language teaching should be based on learner needs. Thus in theory there is no difference between ESP and General English teaching; in practice, however, there is a great deal of difference. How far would you agree with this statement? What differences, either in theory or in practice or in practice do you think there are? In the teaching of English for Specific Purposes lends itself to find the needs of students, i.e. they will learn which are to focus on what they require for their areas of performance. In contrast with General English, is the teaching of language in a general way that is the standard language that is spoken in an Anglo country.
Well, I agree with both answers but also in the second one it is importat to highlight that ESP focus on certain areas and of course with the learners needs on what they want to learn to improve their English(grammar, vocabulary, etc)in their jobs
The relationship between ESP with ELT relies on the fact that ELT is divided into three main branches (EMT-EFL-ESL). In this case ESP is an approach and it is based on the learners' needs. It is divided into two main types EAP English for Academic Purposes and EOP/EVP/VESL English for Occupational Purpose/English for Vocational Purposes/Vocational English as a Second Language. It is meant to be used for a particular purpose but the techniques and methods use for teaching it may be the same as in ELT. Now, the differences that I expect to find between an EOP course and an EAP course for doctors are: firstly an EOP course for doctors should be targeted to a specific área and an EAP course for doctors might be more general within the profession. Apparently GE and ESP are the same because both have the same objective which is to teach English. I agree with the fact that in theory and practice there are differences. To mention some of these differences I may state that even though both approaches are aimed to satisfy students' needs, the former finds students needs in a daily life context and according to cultural, social and sometimes economic aspects. The latter bases its teaching in an occupation or a study and the course becomes more specific. In spite of all mentioned both approaches may have the same methods and teaching techniques.
I agree with your comment, I guess, and correct me if I´m wrong, the only difference between them is the approach, ESP is more focus the use of english in context,ELT focus in the use of english depending on the target field.
ESP concentrates more on language in context than on teaching grammar and language structures. It covers subjects varying from accounting or computer science to tourism and business management. The ESP focal point is that English is not taught as a subject separated from the students' real world, instead, it is integrated into a subject matter area important to the learners. ESP combines subject matter and English language teaching(ELT). Such a combination is highly motivating because students are able to apply what they learn in their English classes to their main field of study, whether it be accounting, business management, economics, computer science or tourism. Being able to use the vocabulary and structures that they learn in a meaningful context reinforces what is taught and increases their motivation.
Sarai, I don't agree with your first statement :/ because GE also concentrates on language in context, however, as you said, it concentrates on teaching grammar :D As you mention, motivation also plays an important role when in ESP, because it does not happen very often that we learn contents related to our BA in a second language (except for this B.A. in A.L. jajaja). And it is so true!!!! In ESP, English is not a separte subject but a part of the core knowledge that Ss need to learn :)
Task 2: There might be indeed some differences in the EAP or EOP course for doctors. In my view, an EAP course for them will focus on some needs that are related to research or doctors that would like to continue in the field as teachers in a particular subject in medicine. On the other hand, the EOP course will be aimed at the type of communication they will encounter in an everyday situation. However, at some extent, there is also a need for them to learn general English as part of the process of learning the language.
Task 3: I agree in the fact that there is a difference between ESP and GE in the practice. This is due to the fact that when learning GE, we can know about different situations every person can encounter in their daily routine as human beings, whereas ESP is more likely to focus on the interactions a person can get in touch with in the field of work they are related to.
From my personal point of view, I think that ESP and ELT will always go together, you can't have ESP without ELT.
